The name Wyoming comes from the Delaware Indian word meaning “mountains and valleys that alternate”. The towering mountains and huge plains provide the spectacular scenery seen only in Wyoming. Its elevation is the second highest in America, following only Colorado. Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest tourist attractions in America. The land of what is today Wyoming was a part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. A fur trapper, John Colter, is the first white known to have entered the area. He explored the Yellowstone area in 1807 and reported seeing the famous geysers and hot springs located there.
Robert Stuart pioneered the Oregon Trail passing through Wyoming during 1812 and 1813. Fort Laramie, the first permanent white settlement and trading post was established in 1834. The western part of the state was obtained from Britain as part of the Oregon Treaty in 1846. The Wyoming Territory was organized in 1869.
Farming and Mining and Tourism are the major industries in Wyoming. The state is rich in oil and natural gas. It also produces sodium carbonate and uranium. Wyoming is the second largest producer of wool in the country, only following Texas and is the third largest producer of sheep and lambs, following only Texas and California. There are also 1,500,000 head of cattle in Wyoming.
Its largest crops are alfalfa, barley, corn, sugar beets, oats and wheat.
Wyoming largest cities and towns are Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette, Rock Springs, Sheridan, Green River, Evanston, Riverton and Cody.
