American and British settlers moved to the area. Conflicting territorial claims threatened war during the 1840’s. In 1846 the Oregon Treaty helped avert war by setting a boundary on the 49th parallel.
Washington is one of the largest lumber producing states. Its forests are rich in Douglas fir, Hemlock, Ponderosa Pine and White Pine, Spruce, Cedar and Larch.
Its farms are the largest producers of apples, lentils, dry edible peas, hopes, pears, red raspberries, spearmint oil and sweet cherries. They also produce apricots, asparagus, grapes, peppermint oil and potatoes. Livestock and the commercial fishing of halibut, bottom fish and salmon are a major source of revenue.
Among Washington’s major industries are aircraft manufacture, timber and lumber, metals and metal products, machinery, chemicals ships and other transportation equipment and computer software.
The state boasts over 1,000 dams for electricity, irrigation, power, water storage and for flood control.
