The state of Rhode Island is thought to be named after the island of Rhodes in Greece. Even though Rhode Island is the smallest state, it is densely populated and highly industrialized.
Rhode Island has always been distinguished by its support of the freedom of conscience and action. In 1636 the clergyman Roger Williams founded the state capitol of Providence after he was exiled by the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was soon followed by other religious exiles from Massachusetts, who settled Pocasset, today’s Portsmouth in 1638 and Newport in 1639.
The rebellious and authority defying nature of Rhode Island was again demonstrated prior to the revolution by the burning of the British revenue cutters Liberty and Gaspee. The colony was one of the earliest supporters of the revolution and declared independence from Britain during May, 1776. Its citizens refused to participate in the War of 1812. The Dorr’s Rebellion of 1842 protested the concept of property ownership being a requirement for voting.
Rhode Island is a national center for medicine, health and ocean and environmental research. The city of Providence is a major wholesale distribution center for all of New England.
The main industries in Rhode Island are jewelry, electronics, metal and plastic products. Boat and ship building also plays a large and traditional part in the Rhode Island economy.
There are fishing ports in Newport and Galilee. Small scale farming exists in Rhode Island. It supports some of the finest wineries in the country. Tourism generates over $1 billion yearly.
Newport was famous in the 19th century as an upscale resort for the wealthy and is also famous for its jazz festival. The Touro Synagogue was built in 1763 and is the oldest in America.
The major cities in Rhode Island are Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, Woonsocket, Newport and Central Falls.
