New Jersey began its early history as a part of New York (or as it was known then, New Netherlands).  In 1664, just one year after the Dutch surrender to England, New Jersey became a colony in its own right. Its first governor was Philip Carteret.

 

1676 saw New Jersey divided between Carteret and English Quakers who had obtained the rights belonging to John, Lord Berkeley.  Later in 1702 New Jersey became a united colony that was administered by the royal governor of New York.

 

In 1738, New Jersey was finally separated from New York and had its own royal governor. Its first governor was William Morris.

 

New Jersey is strategically located between New York City and Philadelphia. This caused New Jersey to become a major battle filed during the Revolutionary War.

The largest industry in New Jersey is chemicals and the state boasts the largest chemical research centers in the world. There are also many oil refineries. The state also manufactures apparel, pharmaceuticals, electrical goods and electronics, machinery and instruments.

 

New Jersey farmers produce poultry, dairy products and milk, seafood, cranberries, blueberries, peaches and vegetables. In fact, 20% of the land in New Jersey is agricultural.
