The first European to explore the Maryland area was Capt. John Smith when he entered Chesapeake Bay. In 1632 King Charles I granted a royal charter to Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert. English settlers, many of them Catholics arrived at St. Clements Island (now known as Blakistone Island) in 1634.
Under the Toleration Act of 1649, passed by the Maryland Assembly, religious freedom was given to all Christians. This was ended by the Puritan Revolt of 1654-1658.
During 1763-1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed Maryland’s northern border with Pennsylvania. In 1791, Maryland gave land for building the nations capitol in Washington, D.C.
The British attempt to capture Baltimore in 1814 and the British naval bombardment of close by Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words to our national anthem.
