In 1541, the Spaniard Francisco De Coronado became the first white to reach Kansas, during his search for gold.
Land claims in 1682 and explorations led by Sieur De La Salle brought Kansas under French control.
France ceded the area to Spain in1763 and was returned to France in 1800. Kansas was later a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The Americans Stephen H. Long, Zebulon Pike and the famous Lewis and Clark all explored this area between 1803 and 1819.
The first permanent settlements in Kansas were military outposts, built at Fort Leavenworth in 1827 and at Fort Riley in 1853. These outposts were built to protect the settlers and travelers along the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail.
Before the civil war, Kansas was bitterly split between pro and anti slavery supporters. The area became sadly known as “Bleeding Kansas”.
