What is now the state of Iowa was first explored by the Frenchman Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673.

 

The United States gained partial control of Iowa with the Louisiana Purchase. Bitter fighting developed between white settlers and Indians during the early 19th century. Land was taken from the Indians after the Black Hawk War in 1832, 1836 and again in 1837. This established Iowa as it is known today.

 

Iowa received statehood in 1846. The original capital was Iowa City. In 1857 the capital was moved to Des Moines, because of its central location.

 

Though Iowa produces much of America’s food, manufacturing is now responsible for most of the states income.

The forests in Iowa produce much of our hardwoods, especially walnut.

 

The state is also rich in minerals such as gypsum, coal and limestone. Iowa also produces cement, sand and gravel.

 

President Herbert Hoover is from Iowa, as were actor John Wayne and “Buffalo Bill”, William F. Cody.
