The Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto was known to have traveled to Georgia in 1540. Britain and Spain had major conflicts over this area. In 1733 General James Oglethorpe obtained a royal charter and established the first settlement in Georgia. It was a refuge for English debtors. Oglethorpe defeated the Spanish in 1742, establishing undisputed English control in Georgia.
Georgia was a confederate stronghold during the civil war. The state saw many bloody battles. The march of General Sherman’s troops is famous. They burnt the city of Atlanta, destroyed a 60 mile wide path to the ocean. He then captured the city of Savannah in 1864.
Georgia is the largest state in the south eastern United States. The state has an ever growing industrial base. Atlanta has developed into the south east’s largest hub for transportation and airlines. It is also the largest distribution center in the area.
