The famous navigator Henry Hudson is credited with discovering what is now Delaware in 1609. A year later, Capt. Samuel Argall from Virginia named the state in honor of Thomas West, the Baron De La Warr, who was Virginia’s first governor.

 

The Dutch tried to settle Delaware in 1631, but failed. Sweden began colonizing the area in 1638. In 1638 they established a settlement called Fort Christina at what is now the city of Wilmington. However in 1655 New Sweden as it was called fell to the New Netherlands forces led by their governor Peter Stuyvesant.

 

By 1664, the British took control of the area and it was transferred to the control of William Penn and by 1682 became the lower three counties of what is now Pennsylvania.

 

During the Revolutionary War, Delaware fought as a separate state.

 

In 1787, Delaware was the first state to ratify the new American constitution.

 

Even though it was a “slave state”, Delaware remained loyal to the Unites States and did not leave the Union.

 

A gun powder mill was built in 1802 by Eleuthere Irenee du Pont. This was how Delaware established its famous and large chemical industry.

 

Delaware’s industries today include the auto industry, machinery and machine parts, vulcanized fibers and textiles, paper, medical supplies and metal products. Delaware is also known as a pioneer in the canned food industry.

 

The state also produces many fruits and vegetables. It produces large crops of hay, corn, potatoes and wheat. Delaware also is main supplier of fish, dairy products and is one of the largest producers of broiler chickens in the country.

 

The major cities in Delaware include Wilmington, Newark and Dover.
