Alaska was first visited by the Dane Vitus Bering (the Bering Straits are named for him) and the Russian Alexei Chirikov. They set foot on the Alaskan mainland and in the Aleutian Islands in 1741.
The land mass of Alaska is equal to one fifth of the continental United States. It was still mostly unexplored in 1867 when the U.S. Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from the Russians in what became famous as “Seward’s Folly”.
The first census of Alaska in 1880 showed that the vast majority of the population totaling 33,426 was native Alaskans.
The transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States took place on October 18, 1867.
The Alaskan Gold Rush in 1898 saw a huge influx of over 30,000 people to Alaska. Since then Alaska has been a major contributor to America’s economy.
Some of Alaska’s major industries include fish and fisheries, timber and wood, furs and tourism.
In 1969 oil and natural gas were discovered near Prudhoe Bay near the Arctic coast. It is estimated to be the more than twice the size of any oil field in North America and is a major source of the worlds energy needs.
In 1977 the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline was completed. The 800 mile long pipeline was built to carry the oil from Prudhoe Bay to the port of Valdez.
The largest cities and towns in Alaska include Anchorage, Fairbanks, the capital Juneau and Sitka.
