Wisconsin is one of America’s pioneers in social legislation. Among the legislation first approved in Wisconsin are providing pensions to the blind in 1907, aid to dependent children in 1913 and old age assistance in 1925. It was the first state to pass an unemployment compensation law in 1932 and was the first state where such a law went into effect. 1984 saw Wisconsin become the first state to adopt a Uniform Marital Property Act.
The state has over 14,000 lakes. Lake Winnebago is the largest. Water sports, ice boating, skiing, hunting and fishing are popular and bring many vacationers and tourists to Wisconsin. It boasts 95 state parks, forests and recreation areas.
In 1634, the Frenchman Jean Nicolet became the first European to explore the area when he landed near Green Bay. 1660 saw the French build a trading post and a Roman Catholic mission near today’s Ashland.
Great Britain gained the area as part of the settlement of the French and Indian Wars in 1763. It was acquired by the United States during the Revolutionary War. However, Great Britain continued to control the area until the War of 1812.
From 1800 the area was governed as a territory by Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. In 1836 Wisconsin became a separate territory receiving statehood in 1848.
Wisconsin is one of Americas leading milk and cheese producing states. The farmers also produce cranberries, beets, hay, oats, potatoes, corn, beans and peas.
