5 MOVERS-Timetable for Local and Long Distance Residential Moves

What You Should Do to be Prepared for My Move? When Should You be Do It?

Timing and Planning is everything in a move. It will be helpful to crate a schedule of when you should be dealing with different aspects of your move. 5MOVERS has prepared the Moving  Timetable to help you through the moving process. This moving timetable will be relevant for both a local move or a long distance move!

ONE MONTH BEFORE YOUR MOVE

-Book your move with your moving company.

-Make all of your travel arrangements.

-Fill out Change of Address forms with both the Post Office and IRS.

-Transfer all your memberships to clubs and civic organizations.

-Obtain copies of all medical and dental records, x-rays, and prescription histories. Ask your doctor      and dentist for referrals and transfer prescriptions.

-Set up a checking account at you bank in your new city.

-Check into the laws and regulations in your new area pertaining to home-based businesses, professional tests, business licenses, and any special laws that might be applicable to you.

-Create a comprehensive inventory of all your belongings BEFORE you pack. This will be important in the event you need to file an insurance claim later. When possible, take pictures or video all of your belongings. This might be important for any reassembly that will need to be done. Record the serial numbers of all of your electronic equipment.

-If you have pets that will be moving with you, contact companies that specialize in transporting live animals.

-Begin using up any food items, especially perishables so that there will be much less left to pack.

ONE TO TWO WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVING DAY

-Switch your utility services to your new address. Inform your electric company, disposal service, Water Company, newspaper person, magazine subscriptions, Telephone Company and Cable Company of your move.

-Arrange for help on moving day.

-Confirm travel reservations.

-Reserve the elevator in your building if moving from or to an apartment building.

-Have appliances serviced prior to moving.

-Clean your rugs, curtains and clothing. Have them prepared for moving.

-Plan ahead for any special needs (such as a baby sitter) you might need for infants and young children.

-Collect valuables from your safe-deposit box. Make copies of any important documents. Hand carry you important documents to your new address.

-Check with your insurance agent to ensure you`ll be covered through your homeowners or renters policy during the move. Look into getting additional insurance if needed.

-Finish packing all your last minute packing, including your clothes.

-Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator and freezer. Disconnect your washer and your dryer.

ON YOUR MOVING DAY

-Make sure you have open lines of communication. Make sure your cell phone is charge and don’t disconnect your land line until the last minute.

-Check all spaces in your residence (closets, drawers, shelves, attic and garage) and be sure everything is packed.

-Carry important documents, currency and jewelry yourself! Do not load it on the moving truck.

-Carry traveler`s checks and credit cards for quick available funds you may need.
