ON MOVING DAY

Moving day has finally arrived! With all the excitement around your local move or long distance move, there are also lots of concerns, pressure and stress which we all go through when we move.

Here are some tips, advice and simple steps to make your moving day a positive experience!

Get a good night of sleep the night before moving day. Moving day will be very an intensive day and being well rested will help you make it through the day.

Try to have all of your belonging packed and prepared the night before your move. Leave out only what you will really need to have access to on moving day and that can be packed at the last minute!

Be sure to keep all lines of communications open! Make sure your cell phone is charged and on and don’t disconnect your land line before moving day!

Check in with the moving company. Make sure there have been no changes in their time of arrival.

Make sure that you have disconnected all of your appliances and that your refrigerator and freezer have been defrosted!

If your move will be a same day local move, be sure that the utilities in your new location have been connected! Remove and pack your bedding! Pack the bedding into one of your last minute boxes.

Be sure that you will be home when the movers are scheduled to arrive. You will want to make sure that you are there to answer any questions the movers might have.  If you will not be present when the movers arrive, make sure that the movers know in advance who the adult representing you will be and that they are authorized to represent you.

Make sure that the authorized person knows what is expected of them and keep an open line to them for any issues that might arise. It is essential that there is an authorized adult present to supervise and oversea the packing and loading of your belongings.

Go over your inventory with the foreman. Make sure that everything is clearly labeled.  Make sure that the condition of every item is noted on the inventory and bill of lading prior to loading the truck.

Read the inventory and bill of lading prior to signing them. Keep them close to you until the move is completed to your satisfaction.

Oversee the loading of the truck. It is your responsibility to make sure that all of your belongings have been loaded. If you will be moving in on the same day or on the day you will be moving in, be sure to have a diagram of where you want your furniture to be placed with you! We recommend going over it with the foreman prior to unloading the truck. Your floor plan will help the movers to unload the truck efficiently and quickly.

Be at your new location prior to the movers’ arrival. The mover will need to be paid prior to unloading the truck.  Be sure you have sufficient funding on hand. Unless you have made other arrangements, payment will be by cash, cashiers check, money order or travelers’ checks. Moving companies will not accept personal checks.

Try to have someone else handy when you are moving in. One person should be checking the items unloaded against the inventory and the other guiding the movers for the placement of your furniture.

Once the truck is unloaded and your furniture is in place, you can start to unpack your belongings. Take your time doing this and don’t feel rushed. Only unpack what you will need for the next few days. It will take a few weeks for you to be fully organized in your new location.
