Oregon is the only state to have two different pictures on its state flag. On one side appears the Beaver which is the state animal and on the other, the state symbol. No one knows the origin of the name Oregon. However, it has been accepted that the name was taken from the writings of a British army officer named Maj. Robert Rogers and was first used by Jonathan Carver in 1778.
Oregon is rich in water, forests and natural resources. Low cost electricity powered by dams has led to the rapid growth of industry in Oregon.
English and Spanish sailors are believed to have sighted the coast of Oregon in the 1500’s and 1600’s. While seeking the Northwest Passage during 1778, Capt. James Cook is known to have charted part of the coastline. In 1792, while sailing on his ship the Colombia, Capt. Robert Gray is known to have discovered the river named after his vessel and he claimed it for the United States.
During 1805 Lewis and Clark are known to have explored the area. John Jacob Astor founded his fur depot, Astoria in 1811. There were disputes between the United States and the Hudson Bay Company. They were resolved in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty, where Great Britain gave up her rights to the area.
The state has one of the world’s largest Salmon fishing industries. Its forests provide revenues of over $3 billion in lumber and almost $900 million in paper and its allied industries.
Besides paper, lumber and plywood, Oregon manufactures metals, aluminum, machinery, chemicals, electronics and foods.
The states farmers lead the country in the production of peppermint, cover seed crops, blackberries, boysenberries, black raspberries, loganberries and hazelnuts. They are second in growing hops, beans, prunes, onions, snap beans and red raspberries.
Oregon’s natural beauty has also created a large and profitable tourist industry.
