In 1834, the area was officially put aside as Indian Territory. On May 2, 1890, the area was split into Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory. Then on November 16, 1907, the two were combined when Oklahoma received statehood.

 

April 22, 1889 marked a special day in the history of Oklahoma. It was the day that homesteading was permitted. 50,000 people entered the area. The gun was supposed to go off at noontime. Those who tried to jump the gun were called “Sooners” and that has become the states nickname.

 

Oil and Natural gas are the major sources of income for Oklahoma. However, oil refining, meat packing and food processing and construction of equipment for the oil industry have all become a part of the manufacturing industry in the state.

 

The state is also rich in natural resources such as helium, gypsum, zinc, cement, silver, copper and coal.

 

Oklahoma’s farms are known for livestock, including cattle and sheep, dairy products, hogs and broilers. The rich plains of the state produce large crops of wheat as well as peanuts, sorghum, cotton and hay.

 

The largest cities and towns in Oklahoma include Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Lawton, Broken Arrow, Edmond, Midwest City, Moore, Enid and Stillwater.
