North Dakota is the most rural of all of the states. More than 90% of North Dakota is farmlands. The singer Lynn Anderson, Former Sec. of State Warren Christopher and former basketball player and coach Phil Jackson all hail from North Dakota.
The area was first explored by in between 1738 and 1740 by Frenchmen led by Sieur De La Verendrye. The United States acquired most of North Dakota as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Lewis and Clark explored the area from 1804 to 1806.
While the area was still under dispute by the United States and England, the first settlers, Irish and Scottish families, arrived at Pembina at settled the land.
In 1818, the U.S. signed a treaty with England and obtained the north eastern part of the territory and in 1823, took possession of Pembina.
The area remained mostly unsettled until the construction of the railroad in the 1870’s and 1880’s.
North Dakota is the nation’s largest producer of spring wheat and Durham wheat. North Dakota farms also supply the country with sheep, hogs, cattle, hay, sugar beets, flaxseed, oats, honey, dry edible beans, sunflowers, rye and barley.
The state has large reserves of oil, coal and natural gas. The main industries are processed foods and farm machinery.
North Dakota is known for its waterfowl, grouse, pheasant, deer hunting, bass, trout and pike fishing. The state boasts 20 national parks and recreation areas.
