In 1623, acting under an English grant, Capt. John Smith sent settlers to start a fishing colony near the mouth of the Piscataqua River. New Hampshire was named by Capt. John Mason who was one of the founders of the city of Portsmouth.
For 38 years, New Hampshire was united with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1679, it became a separate colony.
