In 1848 after the Mexican War, the United States obtained the region. The first permanent settlement, a trading post, was started by the Mormons’ near today’s Genoa.
In 1931, the state created two new industries-Gambling and Divorce. Reno and Las Vegas became the gambling and divorce capitals of America. Liberal divorce laws have changed this, but the state is still one of the gambling capitols of the United States. Gambling accounts for more than 34% of Nevada’s tax revenues.
Cattle and Calves are the leading agricultural industries in Nevada. The state also raises alfalfa, hay, barley, wheat and potatoes.
Nevada industry produces garden furniture, gaming equipment, and garden irrigation equipment.
Nevada is home of the Hoover Dam. Reno, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe are popular resorts and tourist locations.
