The first Europeans to arrive in Minnesota included fur traders and missionaries. The first visitors were French, notably Robert Cavelier, Sieur De La Salle, Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette. The region was claimed for the King of France by Daniel Greysolon, Sieur Duluth in 1679.
The young United States acquired eastern Minnesota from Britain after the Revolutionary War. In 1803 the western part of the state was included as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. Most of the region was explored by Lt. Zebulon Pike prior to 1818, when the northern most part of the state was ceded to America by the British.
