In 1800, Louisiana reverted to French control and was sold by Napoleon to the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The southern part of the state was called by the French Orleans and what is known today as the state of Louisiana.
Louisiana was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. However, the city of New Orleans was captured by the Union Navy and Admiral David Farragut in April, 1862.
The states economy suffered for many years after the Civil War and during the period of reconstruction. The situation did not begin to improve until the beginning of the 20th century when oil and natural gas were discovered.
The state of Louisiana is a national leader in the production of natural gas, oil and sulfur that come from deposits located offshore. The state is also a major producer of salt.
Louisiana grows sweet potatoes, sugar cane, rice, soy beans, pecans, corn and cotton. The state manufactures apparel, chemicals, petroleum, coal, paper and lumber and processed foods.
Hurricane Katrina caused huge damage to Louisiana’s infrastructure and caused many deaths in the New Orleans area and most of the southern part of the state.
