In 1614 the Dutch navigator Adriaen Block became the first European of record to explore what is today Connecticut. The Dutch built a fort and trading post near what is today the city of Hartford in 1633. However, very soon they lost control of the area to English Puritans from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

 

The English quickly established settlements at Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield and by 1639 they formed the colony of Connecticut. This was done under the Fundamental Orders which was the first known modern constitution.

 

Connecticut played a major roll during the revolutionary war. It was the Continental Army’s major supplier of all goods. It developed as a major industrial center and was known as the “Arsenal of the Nation”

.

Connecticut is the capitol if the insurance industry. The oldest published newspaper, the Hartford Courant is located there.

 

The factories in Connecticut produce weapons, helicopters, submarines, jet engines, motors, sewing machines, cutlery and silverware, tools and hardware, clocks and locks.

 

The state has large poultry and dairy industries. It is New England’s largest producer of eggs, mushrooms, peaches and pears. Its crop of oysters is the second largest in the nation.

 

Connecticut has a 250 mile shore line along Long Island Sound and many lakes. This makes it a very popular resort area.

 

Also located in Connecticut is Yale University and was the home state of the famous showman P.T. Barnum.
