Spanish explorers first came to Colorado during the 1500’s. The territory was claimed for Spain by Juan De Ulibarri in 1706.
The territory located in Colorado was obtained by the Unites States in three stages. First, eastern Colorado was part of the famous Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Second, central Colorado became a part of the territory when Texas became a state. Western Colorado was accessed in 1848 during the Mexican War.
Colorado has the highest average elevation of any state. There are 1,000 peaks over 10,000 feet high and 54 that are over 14,000 feet high. The most famous of the Rocky Mountain peaks is Pikes Peak. It was discovered in 1806 by U.S. Army Lieutenant Zebulon M. Pike.
