Auto transport can be an integral part of a long distance move. Auto transport saves all the wear and tear on your car and saves you the hassle of all of that long distance driving. In general, you car will be picked up by the auto transport company at your present residence and be delivered to you at your new residence. Here at 5 MOVERS we only recommend transporting cars on licensed, bonded and insured auto carriers.  Here are some frequently asked questions about moving a car and auto transport. 5 MOVERS nationwide network of auto transport companies is here to make sure your car will be moved expertly, safely and professionally.

Q. How long does it take my car to be shipped?

A. On average it take three to fourteen days for your car to reach its destination depending on where it is picked up and where it`s delivered. The distance between pick up and delivery points, the weather and traffic conditions can affect the time of transport for your car.

Q. How far in advance do I need to book my auto transport?

A. 5 MOVERS recommends that you book your auto transport at least two weeks in advance. Space is limited on car carriers and they tend to fill up quickly. Some of the car carriers in the 5 MOVERS can accommodate transport on short notice.

Q. Will my vehicle be insured during transport?

A. Yes! All auto carriers, like every moving company must be licensed, bonded and carry insurance. The minimum carried by auto transport companies is $100,000. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your agreement with the car carrier carefully to see what is and isn`t covered.

Q. Must all auto transport brokers and car carriers be licensed?

A. Yes. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration must issue all auto carriers an MC# and/or US DOT number, in order for them to operate. Brokers must be bonded and have valid MC#`s. Bonding information can be checked through safersys.com, and is strongly recommended to do so before choosing an auto transporter.

Q. How should I prepare my vehicle for auto transport?

A. If you shipping your car to a cold climate, make sure you have winterized your vehicle by adding antifreeze. Secure any loose items such as antennas. Disconnect auto alarms and anti-theft systems. Remove any car covers as they are not allowed by car carriers during open transport. Closed transport is different and this may be allowed.

Q. Can I store anything in the car?

A. It is illegal to store and transport any items anywhere in the car. Auto Transporters companies are not licensed to carry household goods. In addition, any items stored within the car or vehicle is not covered under the carriers insurance.

Q. Will I need to have my vehicle delivered to a terminal?

A. This might be necessary in the event that there are physical limitations involved such as not enough room for a truck to drop off your vehicle at its destination, because of a narrow or dead end street, or any other conditions that would not allow a truck to enter and exit your street. A terminal could also be a solution in the event no one is available to accept the vehicle upon delivery. These terminals are fully licensed and insured. It should be noted that terminal shipping is less expensive than door to door service.

Q. What forms of payment are accepted by auto transporters?

A. Auto transport brokers and carriers accept cashier and certified or cashiers checks as well as cash and credit cards for the deposit. The balance is due upon delivery and only cash, cashiers or certified checks are accepted unless other arrangements have been made prior to your transport! Every auto transport company has their own payment policy. Make sure you know it by asking and reading the agreement.

Q. What if my vehicle is inoperable, can it still be transported?

A. Yes. However, additional fees will apply as extra equipment and labor are needed when transporting your car.
